5-Roll and System 7: why five fixed numbers produce more lines

Two illustrative lottery trays compare five fixed numbers plus a changing sixth with seven selected numbers.

In Lotto 6/42, System 5-Roll contains 37 six-number combinations, while System 7 contains seven. That can seem backwards: why does a selection of five numbers produce more lines than a selection of seven?

The two systems build their lines differently. In 5-Roll, five numbers stay fixed while the sixth changes. In System 7, every line is a six-number subset of the seven selected numbers. Neither construction predicts which numbers will be drawn.

What the current manual identifies

The PCSO LottoMatik downloads page links its Game Manual. Its printed pages 11–12 describe System 5-Roll and System 7 and list 37 and seven combinations respectively for Lotto 6/42. The arithmetic below explains those counts using our own illustrative selections.

This is a construction comparison, not a ticket purchase guide or a current price and prize quotation. The sample numbers are not recommendations, draw results or an actual ticket.

Five numbers stay in every 5-Roll line

Let the fixed set be {02, 08, 15, 23, 34}. A six-number line needs one additional distinct number. There are 42 − 5 = 37 numbers outside that fixed set, so there are 37 possible completions.

Changing numberResulting set of six
01{01, 02, 08, 15, 23, 34}
03{02, 03, 08, 15, 23, 34}
39{02, 08, 15, 23, 34, 39}
42{02, 08, 15, 23, 34, 42}

Every row retains the same five fixed numbers. A proposed completion of 08 would repeat an existing number, so it would not create six distinct numbers. Sorting the row for readability does not create another combination.

System 7 keeps the whole selection inside a seven-number boundary

Now use {02, 08, 15, 23, 34, 39, 42} as a System 7 selection. Each line leaves out exactly one of those seven numbers. There are seven choices for the omission, giving C(7,6) = 7 distinct lines. No number outside the selected seven enters any of them.

The line {02, 08, 15, 23, 34, 39} appears in both of these examples. But {01, 02, 08, 15, 23, 34} belongs only to the illustrated 5-Roll construction: 01 is outside the System 7 selection. Conversely, a System 7 line can omit 02, whereas all our 5-Roll lines retain it. The constructions overlap without being interchangeable.

For a complete seven-line enumeration and a separate match-count example, read how System 7 builds its lines.

Read the system label before counting

Keep three fields separate in an existing record: the game's number range, the system name and the generated combinations. Five selected numbers do not mean a five-number winning rule; each completed line here still contains six distinct numbers. Likewise, seven lines do not mean seven independent draws.

More lines also carry a different cost, so their count alone is not a value comparison or a reason to spend more. Ticket validation and the applicable prize rules remain separate. The Lucky777 PH lottery guide provides the wider product context, and the Lucky777 PH homepage links the other topics.
